    FTP causing network to choke

Is it possible that FTP connection between a client and a server over a LAN can cause the rest of the network to choke?

If there is no bandwidth throttling then it can be very likely, as FTP can use both Upstream and Downstream. And even on a lan, if there is no throttling in place, it will attempt to use all of the bandwidth that it can. Maybe implementing some Quality Of Service on the router may help, or as stated - try throttling the FTP speed. Most good ftp servers support this option.
