    Need help choosing a firewall

I would appreciate suggestions on choosing a firewall.
I don't have experience with this and need some advice.

I thought about using a router. What would a firewall add for protection?

Are there any firewalls that I can install on a hard drive or on a
    router, that have good documentation?

What do I need to know about networking before I set up a firewall?

    Thanks for help

I use Smoothwall Express, it makes life very easy. You just need an old computer and a couple of network cards. I've been using it since it's first release many years ago, and I didn't have any specialist knowledge when I first installed it. There are user docs for it, but I only used the install guide when I first put it in.

There are other similar firewall distros, too.
