can send ICMP requests only when X11 is started
hi,
new installation Red Hat Linux EL4U7, one network card.
i can ping the network and other machines on it only when the server is started in X11 mode. last night i installed red hat and then set the default init mode to 3 and then restarted. after it came up i couldn't ping any other machine on the network.
# ping 10.16.10.254
From 10.16.10.96 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable
From 10.16.10.96 icmp_seq=2 Destination Host Unreachable
...
i made sure iptables are disabled and i checked my arp table:
# arp
<?> 10.16.10.254 incomplete entry
so i restarted the server in X11 mode and everything works fine now. i guess some service or daemon are somehow set to start in init mode 5 but i am not an experienced linux user so i don't know where to look or what to look for. any help is appreciated.
