newbie networking question
Hi ppl
Im pretty new to Mandrake 10.0 but think I know most of the basics. I am now trying to get the internet installed I have just signed up to Broadband and need to share the connection with a Win98 PC. I have bought a netgear 834 router.
I have a ethernet card installed on boot up eth0 says failed, when I have nothing plugged in, and just hangs if I plug the router in.
I am a total newbie when it comes to networking and is the first time I have looked into it.
I have done a lot of searching but a lot of what I have found is way over my head.
Can any one point me in the right direction for some basic networking information and what I need to do to get this set up.
Thanks
Martyn...

No I havent seen that.
Sorry I am not being much use. I have been trying to get my head round it but just can't.
Under windows I connect the netgear DG834 box to my network card in the instructions it tells me the IP address as default of the router is 192.168.0.1 when I go to that address I get logged in to the router. Under linux I just get an error accessing 192.168.0.1.
I have been into Harddrake and run the config tool. I selected LAN set up but I dont understand a lot of what it asks me.
Sorry again for being so dumb I just really need some help.

Have you set up the Router ands the Win98 machine to use DHCP or have you got the Win98 Machine on fixed IP address?

Both the router and the win98 PC are set to DHCP.
What I have done so far is stop Mandrake trying to bring up the network on boot up. If I run DHCPCD i get an ip address from the router (I proved this by changeing the range of addresses the router gives from .2 - .254 to .5 - .254, If that maes sence)
The problem now is that I cannot navigate to the routers IP address, I just get a cannot load page (or words to that affect) in the browser window I also cant ping the router.
Below is the result of ifconfig and a ping test.
It just goes on like this.[martyn@localhost sbin]$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0D:61:2A:6A:0A
inet addr:192.168.0.5 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask:255.255.255.0

[martyn@localhost sbin]$ ping 192.168.0.1

If anyone has any ideas I would be very greatfull. Also if there is anymore information I can give please ask.
