    Welcome to the forums!

Not sure that I'm following your question... are you asking for alternatives to CentOS, other modem options, or fixes for your current modem situation?

Ditto Ozar's response. To note: if you are connecting via a DSL modem as you seem to be doing, you can either connect it to a router, or directly to your computer. Which is it? If directly to your computer, you may need a "patch" cable for the modem to work. So, please describe in more detail your hardware configuration and how you are trying to connect to the modem.
