Having tried to get mount working for non-root user have resorted to using excellent nautilus file browser (installed using synaptic) File / Connect to server menu. Did the following:

1. File/Connect to server...
2. Windows share
3. Server: 192..etc
4. Share: Windows shared folder name
5. Add bookmark: checked
6. Bookmark name: Name to appear for future use/clicks

Works fine for non-root user mount.
