    Help installing Portsmith (PSA1U1E)/ SMSC LAN9500A USB-ethernet FC11

    I need help installing the portsmith (PSA1U1E) which appears to be the SMSC LAN9500A chipset in a legacy system that is running FC11....(2.6.29.5.191.fc11.i686.PAE)..
    I don't have the option of upgrading fedora to current release which supports this adapter at this point. I need to just add the appropriate package.

    when installed the dmesg is:

    idvendor=0424 idproduct=9e00

    and it doesn't register it as an ethernet device

    it looks like support for it was added to the linux kernel around 2.6.28 so it should already be built in. e.g., on my system:

    Code:
    $ modinfo smsc95xx
    filename:       /lib/modules/3.3.7-1.fc17.i686.PAE/kernel/drivers/net/usb/smsc95xx.ko
    license:        GPL

    depends:        usbnet,mii
    intree:         Y
    vermagic:       3.3.7-1.fc17.i686.PAE SMP mod_unload 686
    parm: turbo_mode:Enable multiple frames per Rx transaction (bool)
    so perhaps you just need to do:

    Code:
    modprobe smsc95xx
    if that doesn't work (i.e, the kernel driver is not there), then perhaps you need to built it from a later kernel source that has it. or try downloading the driver from SMSC.
