Do linux boxes send MAC addrs to the net for a USB dongle?

... like a 3G dongle or whatever? What does the DHCP server give it an IP based on?
    And, isn't this insecure?

    Thanks.

    No and no.

The 3G dongle talks to the servers at the phone company's end, and it's a closed loop connection point-to-point. Any IP address negotiation does not go out to the Internet.
