    Hi all,

    # The primary network interface
    auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet static
         address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
         nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
         nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
         netmask xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
         broadcast xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Who assigned you the static IP address? From your post you seem to be connecting directly to the computer from the cable connection. When you say you cannot connect to the ISP, what exactly are you trying to do?
Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.
