Are you trying to ping the "internal" adress of the external one?
if external is the PC connected?
what are you pinging from?
can linux ping itself?\"Meditative mind\'s is like a vast ocean... whatever strikes the surface, the bottom stays calm\" - Dalai Lama

I dont know for win2k, (but WindowsXP) needs to have NetBios enabled to be able to be pinged from other comp on the network.
Also how is your network setup? hub, router, direct rj-45\"Meditative mind\'s is like a vast ocean... whatever strikes the surface, the bottom stays calm\" - Dalai Lama
