Just a post to let everyone know.
I spent two days working on the D-Link DWL-650 .vM1 and got it to work, but the only reason I bought that card was because every list either stated that the AL1611 would not work in Linux, or didn't include it in lists that do work. Well I am typing and sending this wirelessly using my Asante AL1611 with the ndiswrapper 1.1 driver. I used the .inf file that came with the installer cd when I purchased the card years ago. Linux (mandrake 10.1, kernel 2.6. doesn't recognize any information about the card, for the most part, and gui config pulldowns just say wlan0, but the card seems to be working flawlessly.
The D-Link windriver from their site did not work, however the one from the cd did, and it seems to integrate better with Linux, i.e. pulldowns in gui state that it is a Realtek chipset etc. However, the annoying constant blinking of the ACT light is going to keep me using the AL1611 as long as it continues to work.
Thanks for all the help from the community.
A much happier newbie over here,
