    nmap can be intimidating at first, it has a lot of options to select, try using it's frontend to begin with, 'nmapfe'

    As far as I see it, Nessus is the best free seurity scanner that I have been around. Nmap is good for searching open ports, but Nessus will take you way beyond the feature of Nmap. Just to clearify, Nessus will also use Nmap in some of it's tests.
