    Query: Extarnal Modems to Avoid?

I'm looking for a "new" modem.

I know to stay away from internal modems, USB modems, and controllerless modems. It is going to be an external serial modem.

I've got some loyalty to US Robotics, but I'll still look around a bit at the other brands.

Rather than asking what brands of modems others suggest, I was wondering if anyone could suggest which brands to avoid?

I was told that almost all COM port modems are compatible with Linux, though I have no experience as I've only ever used internal 56k's and external usb's (I now use a router, but that doesn't count because its not physically controlled by the PC).

Well, I don't know which to avoid, but from everything I read, anything with an Intel chipset will work out of the box on the generic driver.
