Your best bet would be Samba: http://us2.samba.org/samba/

Is there a version of Linux that I can use "out of the box" to join an established XP network. presently have Mandrake 10.1 on linux box and Windows XP on two other machines. Using a SMC wireless router connected to a DSL modem, and have access to the internet with the linux machine but cannot see the machine on my network or see the XP machines on the linux box.

The only one I've tried that did that was Mepis. I don't remember doing any configuration for it other than maybe setting my workgroup. You can use it as a Live CD just to see, so you don't have to install it if it doesn't do what you want. http://www.mepis.org/
