    Postfix and DNS

I have installed Postfix on my server with DNS. I am not sure what information I should provide here so let me explain the setup and goals.

I have SuSE Enterprise 9, Apache, Static IP address. In other words a hosted website/server. The goal is to also have this as a mail server.

I am able to send emails to certain addresses like hotmail, but not others. I am also able to send to a local email address. I am not able to receive amything.

In the failure header of trying to send to the postfix address:

Can someone please tell me why my log is filling up with this. Looks like the queue is trying to send email with the TO: "unknown"?

This started when I uncommented the pop3b in the inetd config. I might add this is more activity than before.

I could be wrong, but in looking at the logs, it appears it is timing out.

Could this be related to my MX records? Remember this is a static IP address. I have a business line piped in here.

    Firewall settings?

All of this advice is based on the assumption that the hingedmind domain you provided was your actual domain.

I tried to connect to your mail server and the connection timed out. I checked the returned MX record for the domain and it does match the static IP you supplied in a later message however in that later message you write that the machine IP is 10.0.0.10.

Is the Internet connection attached directly to the mail server or is there a router of some description in between. If it is the latter you will need to set up a rule on the router to forward network traffic on port 25 to the mail server.

The log entries in the third message all belong to the smbd deamon which is part of Samba, so they wont affect your email setup. On the other hand, they seem to be having network problems too.

Your mail server doesn't actually need a DNS server on the same machine. The DNS records everyone will be interested in are hosted by Worldnic.com.

As for sending mail; Your ability to send email internally and to some external domains suggests your configuration is good but that your mail is being blocked at the other end. Being listed as potential spam would be my first guess. A quick check of some of the blacklist sites suggests you are OK on that front (http://rbls.org/?q=mail.hingedmind.com) so I'm not sure what is going on.

Try and fix incoming mail and see if you start getting bounce messages from other servers. They may contain useful messages that will tell you what is going on.

    Hope that helps

    Chris...
To be good, you must first be bad. "Newbie" is a rank, not a slight.
