Can you give some details on the modem? What brand is it, model name/number type of connection etc.

I got these information using a tool called scanModem from linmodem.org:
Class 0703: 8086:2486 Modem: Intel Corp. 82801CA/CAM AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [Generic])
SubSystem 1179:0001 Toshiba America Info Systems Toshiba Satellite 1110 Z15 internal Modem
Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 11
Checking for IRQ 11 sharing with modem.
XT-PIC uhci_hcd, uhci_hcd, yenta, yenta, Intel ICH3
I hope it is enough to specifiy the problem

Recompile the kernel with support for your modem. It takes less than 10 minutes.
