    WINS on Samba

    Hi,
I have a wins server running on samba and was wondering if it is wise to have more than one wins server per subnet. I think the samba docs tell you not to, but the person who set up wins on this network might have indeed had two, one of which definitely isn't now and I keep getting a lot of errors in the logs regarding packets that should be sent to a wins server and not here, which I am cleaning up on the offending machines. It got me thinking whether I should have a second WINS server as a backup, the way people usually have 2 dns servers.

    Any suggestions or experiences?

WINS can have replication partners and for larger networks, allows for fault tolerance. Given the relative size of your network dictates the number of WINS servers.
