    is it an outbound or inbound connection?

    You should also be aware that your PC will open a connection FROM a port, TO a port, so a good understanding of TCP/IP and UDP protocols would come in handy.

    You can use "iptables" to control your firewall, do you currently have any firewall scripts or use a GUI to control your firewall?
