proxy problems

hi!!
i have suse 10.0 enterprise server installed on my machine. i am in a networked environment with a proxy and a gateway setup for http/ftp/https access. both are (as far as i know) windows machines (dont ask me why it is so ) . now the thing is this:

$ i can set the proxy in firefox n access webpages
$ if i use the same settings in yast proxy settings, i cannot connect from the terminal
$ after making the above changes in yast, if i set firefox to use 'system settings', i still can connect to the net but im not so lucky from the terminal.

are the proxy settings in yast systemwide?? how can i access the net from my terminal?
