I have a samba 3.0.22 server running on a 2.6.17 kernel sharing out a few shares, one of which is used by lots of clients. Ever since I switched from the very old server to this new one, I have had nothing but problems on the network, with intermittent connectivity problems causing all kinds of havoc in applications getting messages like write access denied or device out of space when there is tonnes of space on the network drive that the file in on.

Most of the clients are Windows 2000/XP but I also have a lot of other linux servers using this share. Here is an excert from one of the servers that I get over and over in the logs of one of them for example. The share is mounted via smbfs on the local mountpoint and the request shown is via a link in the local filesystem ( logs -> /mnt/drive/path/to/logs ) so the file trying to be accessed is logs/w-s-2006-10-07-2.log
kernel: smb_add_request: request [000001028b2ecb40, mid=11651] timed out!
kernel: smb_file_write: logs/w-s-2006-10-07-2.log validation failed, error=-5
The share is jammed and I can't use anything on it or ls anything there.

Does anybody know what is going on?
