Losing internet connection after a few minutes

I'm currently using ubuntu and whenever I log into the os, I lose the internet connection after 4 or 5 minutes. Has anybody heard of this? No programs crash during this, i'll just be reading something on a website and the second i type a new address in, or click on a link it searches for the website for a minute and then gives up.

it's cable internet going directly into my onboard ethernet port. I thought at first it might have just been firefox, but it's the actual connection. It still works on my vista partition though (i had to reinstall windows because of this
