    pppd troubleshooting

    Hey there,
I have a Linux box (Mdk 9.0) which used to be connected with DSL with a modem Sagem F@st 800. It worked perfectly.

I had to change ISP (it is now Wanadoo, who do not support Linux - how nice...). The modem is exactly the same. But it won't work.

I found the debug outputs from pppd in /var/log/daemons/info, and it seems that it connects for about 20 sec (I was able to ping some addresses on the net, and even once to connect to my ISP homepage !!)
and then it appears the modem hangs up. Then it keeps trying and trying again (sometimes authentication doesn't even succeed) until pppd dies.

    Here's how I call pppd :
    %pppd debug pty pppoa

I got the script pppoa from my previous ISP or with the modem drivers, and it worked perfectly.

I have no idea what's going on... Any hint is welcome, here's the output of pppd :

    ppd trouble shooting

    Hello
It seems to be a problem with authentication, have you checked the script to make sure you are using your new Wanadoo login name and password correctly, it could possibly be using your old login name and password or you have not used the full user name correctly ie name@wandoo.xxx , also you might need to set it so it uses PAP and CHAP for authentication, also does your new ISP use a static IP address or is it assigned via DHCP when you login.
I cannot give more info as I do not use Mandrake but you should be able to glean all the details from the Windows setup details from your ISP.

Hope this points you in the right direction.

    pppoa or pppoe ?

I had already changed my login and password with those my new ISP gave me.
Anyway, I do get connected for about 20 secs, before "Modem hangup" (see first post)

Not knowing whether I should use pppoe or pppoa, I had only tried pppoa ; I gave a try at pppoe ; ain't working either...

    Here's the output...

    Output from /var/log/messages :

It seems to work better with pppoa : at least I get connected, be it only 20 seconds...

    Any idea welcome !

    pppoa or ppoe

    Hello petitcolin

Have you followed the text and installed the driver from Sagem because I do think that your modem is not correctly setup via the various scripts in your system:

    http://www.sagem.com/web-modems/down...u_linux_en.txt

as for wether you use pppoA or pppoE is information you should get from your ISP.
