Acer Aspire One 3G not connecting to Vodafone UK

I'm having a lot of trouble connecting to Vodafone UK from my Aspire One built in Option Trobetrotter 3G. I've not managed to get it to work once. The 3G switch is on.

I've experimented with loads of pppd options, including turning off different compression algorithms. However, nothing works.

Vodafone simply don't send an IP address back through IPCP. They just send a load of made up DNS addresses.

I think it may be some sort of authentication issue, but there is no indication of failure in the logs, there is no pin on the card. The SIM works fine from Windows in a Vodafone stick.

Any ideas?

Did you find a solution to your problem?

I've been having similar problems with my AC850. This problem has plagued me for 4 years now and I haven't had many responses to my posts. Nevertheless there might be something in the replies I have had which might help you. When I do finally get a solution, I will post it there... (Linux Forums too, if I feel that starting a new thread is waranted).

I can't paste the link, because this is my first post on this forum. However, if you try searching the "LinuxQuestions" forum for "AC850 Ubuntu 10.04" you should find my post. (Same username as for this forum).

How does the Aircard connect to the PC, via PCMCIA bus, or other? Is this a GSM, or a CDMA device? What service is this for (AT&T, T-Mobile, Vodaphone, Sprint)?

Hi Rubberman,

The Sierra Wireless AC850 is a PCMCIA GPRS/Edge/G3/HSDPA modem (not CDMA). My access is via eplus (Germany). The contract is a BASE flatrate, though that is not particularly relevant.

I cannot post links, because I'm too new to this forum (min. 10 posts before I'm allowed). If you go to linuxquestions.org and search for "AC850 Ubuntu" or just look for my login, "achim_59", you should find my posts and all the relevant info on my most recent attempts to get the AC850 working under Linux.

I recently bought a Nokia CS-15, because it supposedly supports linux out of the box. Well, it didn't work... why am I not surprised? I then tried downloading the relevant package from the Nokia website and tried to install it. There appears to be a dependency problem and it didn't install correctly either. However, the card had started flashing blue, so it knew that a HSPDA connection was available. Hence I tried configuring kppp.

The result was encouraging, if not actually successful. On the terminal I could see what the results of the AT-comands gave. Everything was fine until it came to the "CONNECT" command. Apparently my machine sent a string of gibberish:

The "NOCARRIER" from my machine confused me, so I checked /var/log/syslog and found:

The "NO CARRIER" is obviously a result of the peer hangup. So why did the peer hangup? I'm assuming it is because there was a nonsense string sent by my machine. Is this a compression probem?

Subsequently I tried writing a suitable pppd script (cs-15) and using the old favourite pon cs-15. The result?

That came from /var/log/syslog (the most useful echo of system info that I know of). I commented out the udev rule to remap the device which I had used for the AC850 but maybe that might be a way to get pon to work.

I'm not sure that hijacking somebodyelses thread is the best way to get a solution, even when that thread has been inactive for over a year. What do you think? Should I start a new thread?
