I would like to set up a home network with 2 clients and 1 file server using NFS. How do I set the computer name? I know that hostname will allow me to set the hostnames on the systems. I want the following names:
edward for my computer
toni for the wifes computer
file_server for the file server
I want the network or hostname to be haddock.family
so that my computer would be edward.haddock.family or something like that? This way I can set up shared folders on the file servers for our music and such. I know that IP addressing schem so no worries. Any advice is appreciated.
You should use hostname (man and go...) to setup name of the hosts. This is not very usefull for network host naming... this is done by a DNS,
About network names, you have to install and setup a DNS service (bind, named...). You can look around for a quick tutorial....
