Connecting Gigabit Ethernet to 10 Mb Ethernet
I have a an old target machine running 10 MbEthernet (half duplex) which is being controlled by a new server computer running Fidora 1.0 with a 2.6 Linux Kernel over a Gigabit Ethernet interface. The old target machine is a no longer supported home grown application/DOS like operating system.
Between these two boxes is a 10 Base2 Convertor.
The application between the 2 boxes uses TCP/IP.
The problem we encounter is that we cannot reliably connect to the target box after resetting either of the computers. The only solution we have been able to come up with is to start "pinging" the old target machine from the new server box, and then physically reboot the old target machine. Eventually, "ping" comes back with a success and our application can then proceed to connect using TCP/IP socket communications.
In probing using ethertool, is looks like auto-negotiation is disabled.
It is not clear if this is a hardware or software problem. Any suggestions?
