I would think a standard external modem attached to a serial port would be the easiest type of modem to get working in Linux..
Certainly easier than an internal winmodem, or USB modem..
I have never heard of problems with external serial modems. The only driver needed is for the serial port, which is setup by default in most (all?) cases. I have 2 different models of US Robotics that work great.
I used to use an external modem before I got my broadband connection, four or five years ago now. In them days, it was the only way to be certain that it was compatible with Linux. I had it set to do dial-on-demand too. And it took all day to download a kernel update...
Sure, broadband is fast and easy, but dial-up is cool. I got my stage1 gentoo install through it and now I'm learning about maintaining it which occaisionally needs a big download, but it works well for me.Quote:
