installing winmodem

Hi,
I am running mandrake 9.1 3 disk gpl and
I have a motorola sm56 pci modem and can't get it to work.
I have installed the driver and it didn't bring up any error messages
when i tried to set up a connection it said no modem so after trolling
around i got some info on what.
I reinstalled and typed in insmod sm56 at the command prompt
and this came up

[root@localhost root]# insmod sm56

a gcc version 3 compiler. This is known to not work.

does anyone know if i can install gcc version 2 or do i need a new modem?

I also did dmesg and it brought up a long list of stuff would it help if i
posted it.

already done it

Give up and get a real modem. You will spend days trying to get it to work and it more than likely wont.

before you give up, have you been able to find a non-rpm driver file (ie. one that is in the gzip format)?

I ask, as I've had a similar problem with a Lucent driver (attempted to install from and rpm) and had to seek out a newer driver on the web. Admitadly I ended up finding a newer rpm, which did work with my version of the gcc libraries.

You got a winmodem working??

(First post from Linux ;) )

If you have another computer that can connect to the internet, that is Internet Connection sharing capable. I would suggest doing that. It is much less of a headache, now that I have seen the light, and I can help you set it up. :)

to answet Ol Man, yes I have a Linmodem (winmodem) working . I have successfully used it since Redhat 7.3 (I'm now on 9.0). It is Lucient chipped and I get my rpms from a nice man in Germany.

So, you see, it can be done.

i have a conexant v92 modem and i got it working grand.
have you tried checking if there is a driver on the makers website??

I'm fortunate enough to have a high speed connection, but I understand how frustrating it can be to not be able to get your modem working. What good's a computer that can't access the 'net?!? :evil:
