Multiple PCI Nics
How does linux detect and assign names to ethernet cards? I have three that need to be configured so that the "top" pci slot is assigned to eth0, the second to eth1 and so on. Is there a way to do this w/o knowing what those cards will be everytime(I need something that will assign those names to the corresponding cards, no matter what card the user uses...EX: you could swap the cards around and it would still assign them correctly)?
Your NICs will be detected and named in the same order everytime if you don't move thier physical positioning, AFAIK. I'm not sure how Linux detects which is which, though, but I'm pretty sure their names won't change. :)
When you run ifconfig on your cards, the device driver would be linked to the MAC address of the card, so swapping another (identical) card into the slot may not work.
