Need filesharing setup assistance (Windows <--> Linux)
I have Mandrake 10.1 installed on Dell A (using KDE) and W2K Pro on Dell B. My internal network is setup through a DLink DI-604 router which is connected to my DSL modem.
I installed and played around with Linux for the 1st time last night. Everything worked great except for setting up file sharing with a W2K box. I can access the 'net just fine on the linux box and I can ping the W2K box but I can't get Windows to even ping the linux box. The W2K box can get out to the 'net just like the linux box so it seems that all the tcp/ip stuff is OK on both boxes. The W2K box's ip address is in the hosts and hosts.allow file and nothing is in the hosts.deny file. I even added the linux box to the windows lmhosts file just to be sure.
I read some articles on ipTables last night but I didn't try anything with it. I did find something in some type of "control panel" on the linux box and found a security setting somewhere about a firewall and the allow all box was checked. A guy at work said the linux box may be blocking the ping requests since I installed linux with a security level of higher (I think that is what it was called, its the one just below paranoid). ????? Anyone know how to get the W2K box to at least see the linux box. Shouldn't I be able to ping the linux box without having Samba setup?
I have read Samba articles/how-to's until I am almost buzzed. I have been searching/browsing/reading these forums for most of the day trying to figure this out.
I think I may be on the right track with Samba but I still can't make a dir shared on the linux box but that is a different thread (maybe).
Thanks for any help,
