So check this out:
After I run the ifconfig command again, it states that the broadcast address is 172.16.255.255 rather than 172.16.1.255.Quote:

So it looks like the broadcast address is really defined by the ip address and the assumed netmask (255.255.0.0) rather than what I type (255.255.255.0).
Correct me if I'm wrong but shouldn't the broadcast addr be determined from the netmask and the IP address?
