    Having your second partition mounted at /home is generally a very good idea. Then you can make your backups there.

    Otherwise, reinstall. Not that there is no other way, but reinstall is faster and safer in most cases. As this is a test system, and the catastrophe has yet to take place... Just keep your user files and your system files at separate partitions and you'll be fine.
