    Cool hal problems

    i have just installed ubuntu 7.04 as an alternate operating system on my amd64 machine. when i first installed it, it booted up perfectly, and outside of being rather clumsy at finding and istalling audio codecs, i felt like perhaps it was the end of my windows dependancy. unfortunately, now every time i boot into ubuntu i recieve the error 'Failed to Initialize Hal!'. i'm not used to running dos commands, but i faithfully reproduced every possible fix i could find on the internet to absolutely no avail. my media resides on my external hard drive and now i can't get ubuntu desktop to recognize it, so i'm forced back into windows. is there any REAL help for this bug? i've only gotten the run-around so far. thanksgrassisblue

    Cool

    Hey,
    HAL is short for 'hardware application layer' and is used to translate low-level hardware/devices by the main operating system layer to the presentation layer (your desktop), and would handle such things as the display adapter, media disks, sound and so on.
    Anywaysl seems to be common bug for many peoples after booting ubuntu. This problem is due to your DVD ROM that crashes your Hal. Just give a try by adding below line.
    "hdc=noprobe hdc=cdrom" to kernel parameter in /boot/grub.menu.lst
    That might click.
    Secondly if you have any samba shares in fstab remove those entries that will stop automounting samba shares. Reboot the machine.
    Do update us.
    Regards,

    strip; finger; mount; gasp;
    yes; uptime; umount;

The OS is sooooooooo awesome though. the hook is in but not set. thanks, grassisblue
