light yet user friendly distro for older laptop?

hello, i've fiddled with linux a bit before, tried installing gentoo, but never really got anywhere with it; i'm pretty pedestrian when it comes to computers

so, i'm going to be getting an ibm x30 laptop with 256mb of ram and a pIII 1.2ghz

so, i'm hoping someone can suggest a distro

    here's what i need:

    1. FREE
    2. lite on resources
    3. user friendly

suggestions? maybe suse? i'll have a 40gb hdd so i shouldn't have problems there; and i have external dvd drive so no problems with install

i just want the most simple distro i can find, but that will run nice and fast on an older computer (hence the desire for linux in the first place)

    thoughts?

    thanks

    Hi !

90% Linux Distros are free to download. Check this Poll on Distro for Older Computers.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
