    Fedora update HELP!

Hello everyone! i am beginer to linux.

i just dont know which fedora i am using, can someone tell me the command or method to check that which version of fedora am in using?

my 2nd question is that, suppose i am a fedora 4 user , will yum -y update will update my fedora to 7 or i have to buy separate cd for what ? Problem is that i dont have cds and i cant buy as its not available at place where i live ... but i have DSL connection , is there any way to update to fedora (latest version) from internet ?

and the 3rd problem that i am facing is that, i want to use msn messenger in linux and i can;t ... Intenet messenger that is built-in in fedora only signs in my yahoo account. but i want to use msn messenger. what can i do ???

i will be thankful for any kind of help. i am newbie of linux and just installed linuxe fedora in my pc few days ago.

    Hi ,

For the version you'll have a look to the /etc directory, there you'll fin something like fedora-version , but i'm not sure.

yes yum will update your machine , but i don't prefer this solution since i faced always big problems , what i do is only to change the root directory (usually i make the /home partition alone so i don't have to play with it.

for the messenger the gaim has an option for msn protocol , but if you want web cam you'll try amsn or kopete.

    regards.
Linux is not only an operating system, it's a philosophy.

You can upgrade Fedora using YUM only but its not recommended. Download LiveCD of Fedora 7 and go for fresh install, if possible,

There is a built in command that tells you a lot about your linux system

From the terminal, execute uname -a

uname takes many parameters. -a lists them all.

execute "man uname" and it will tell you all about uname.

uname -a command displays info of kernel and OS only. It doesn't tell any thing about name and version of Distro.

thanks alot to everyone who contributed here to help all other newbies like me. My distribution is fedora 4 and last night i updated my system and it is still fedora 4 ... i was hopeful to get upgrade to fedora latest dist. And about downloading liveCD of latest fedora. will i be able to install it without wrinting that onto cd ?

once again ! thanks all of you.

one more thing, "sudo yum install amsn amsn-plugins" displays

    [root@localhost ~]# sudo yum install amsn amsn-plugins
    Setting up Install Process
    Setting up repositories
Reading repository metadata in from local files
    Parsing package install arguments
    No Match for argument: amsn
    No Match for argument: amsn-plugins
    Nothing to do

and when i download its package from website, i follow the steps of installation , it finishes successfully but i cant find where it is installed.

sorry for the that man. This actually works for only distributions of Fedora core 5 and above

depending on the type of installation you did you can find it in /usr/bin directory or /opt

    or find it using
    Code:
     whereis -b amsn

I would suggest you to go for Fresh Install only. There is a lot of difference between Fedora Core 4 and Fedora 7. Upgrade will not work.

Its possible but again, you will have to do a lot of work.
Back up data, burn Latest version, Fedora 7 to CD and go for clean install.
