What password are you trying to recover... root, or user?
What distro are you running?oz

distro = distribution, as in Linux distribution
Here's a HowTo for resetting the root password:
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/lin...-password.html
Note that this howto is written for a distro that is installed to the hard drive.
If you are using a liveCD, let us know which one and we might be able to help with that.Last edited by oz; 08-23-2007 at 02:51 AM. Reason: spelling

Ubuntu uses sudo rather than root access, so root password won't matter. You should have set a user password during the Ubuntu installation.
When you go to enter a command, it should look like this:
After pressing ENTER, you enter your user password when requested.Code:sudo command-name
