The first thing everyone will want to know is what distro are you using, what desktop environment (Gnome/KDE/etc), what sound card, and what (if anything) have you tried to get it working?
That said, sound is quite often muted by default, so you might need to find your sound mixer control and increase the sound level. On Gnome, go to:
System / Preferences / Sound
