Welcome to the forums!

Take a look at the link in my signature for lots of good information on getting started with Linux. In addition, here's a poll that might help regarding favorite distributions for older computer hardware:

Have fun with Linux!

I would recommend INSERT Linux:
INSERT (english pages)
It's a 60MB Live CD (10 times smaller than Knoppix
) which should fit in your RAM and let you surf the Internet.

That is NOT a crappy computer, it's better than mine

I would recommend adding a little RAM to it though. I have 512MB, and that is enough for many distro's. You have more choice then. As I said, I have a crappier machine than you, and I've been able to spice it up pretty good using Linux
Can't tell an OS by it's GUI

Those specs will run modern Linux distributions. Depends what the processor actually is. I had a 1.9Ghz Intel Pentium 4 that got it's ass sorely kicked by the 1.6Ghz AMD Athlon XP I had after.
