    [Opensuse] Desperetelly trying to install

I titled this thread [OpenSuse], but the problem would happen even with another distro
My hd is 250 Mb with windows xp installed; all space is for windows, there's no unassigned space.
I followed the various step of installation until custom partitioning; I chose to reserved 90 Gb to Linux (included swap) and the rest to winXP.
Everything's fine until now, the system ask which software to install and I left default settings. I clicked on "Install", the system starts to compress the hd and immediately stops with an error during Compressing hard-disk, at the end of the message there's the following error: "Please try to free less space"
I tried even with PartedMagic: while trying to resize the ntfs partition with windows Xp inside, i got the error: Extended record needed (1032>1024), not yet supported. Please try to free less space.
I started to free 50 gb and I got that error. In the end I tried to free 1 gb only and I got the error as well.
I hope to have a little bit of light from one of you, thanks a lot in advance

    Welcome to the forums!

Did you defragment your drive before you started?

You can also try to utilize the Parted Magic LiveCD for your partitioning needs:

    Parted Magic

It's a small download and burn to CD, and is a clone of Partition Magic. Good directions for using it can be found on their website.

It looks like BIOS version of your machine is pretty old. Its forcing 1024 Cylinder limit. Try to upgrade BIOS to latest version.
Boot up from Parted LiveCD, open Terminal and execute fdisk -l command. Post output here.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I dont agree with devils_casper. Its not a BIOS problem. You should scan your Hard Disk. It could be dying. BACKUP DATA.

Yes, the bios was outdated and now everything's fine. Only a minor problem is that the bios screen (that usual one where you can press "del" to get inside bios) stay there for 15/20 seconds and i couldn't find an option inside bios to reduce the time
