    Computer and distribution help

    Hello!

I am very new to Linux and would like to ask some advice. I have an i386 pc running Windows xp (for now) with kind of a quirky bios. I would love to try some distros but the only live cds it will boot from are versions of Puppy Linux (which i really like by the way) I have used the lowest speed burning and have verified these are good burns. I am pretty confused at this. I know there are ways of installing Linux without live cds, but lack the knowledge to try. If anyone has any advice on a solution to either getting my computer to run live cds or info on installing various distributions without one it would be greatly appreciated. I would love to get acquainted with Linux and add some of my own support to the community.

If Puppy boots as a live CD, so there is shouldn't be a problem booting the other like Knoppix, so my suggestion it's to use Ubuntu , download the Live CD wish you can boot on and then you can install it easily if you like to .

all what you have to do it's to make a partition for Linux with ext3 or reiserfs and a partition for swap usually it's the size of your physical RAM.

    Regards.
Linux is not only an operating system, it's a philosophy.

    Welcome to the forums!

Be sure to take a look at the link in my signature for lots of good information on getting started with Linux.

As for installing non-liveCDs, it's basically a matter of burning the CD properly, then putting the disk in the CD drive, then booting from that drive to start the installation routine. Most installations are pretty well automated and very little human interaction is required.

    Have fun with Linux...
