    Libdvdcss woes

    Hi

first to all linux lovers, i want say that i love linux but when it comes to install packages and then thing dont work out-i just get fed up with linux and its support.
i just installed debian on my imac g3 (love it) but then i come to know that i cant play DVD coz of libdvdcss2 and its plugins so with help of linux forums but errors errors errors......then i moved to ubuntu (thought it might help) but same disapointment more over other users dont help either, now end up on this forum-hope so someone can help.

can any one plzz tell me any ppc (imac)linux distro which have features like ubuntu or debian but do not require libdvdcss2 or DVD plugins.
i have used XAndros and its is fine, no problem with it but it is not for imac architect

Distros don't "require" libdvdcss. However, if you wish to be able to use CSS-encrypted DVDs, you will need this library. That's just the way the media players are written.

With Ubuntu (or Debian), the way to install any package is "apt-get install PACKAGE". Alternatively, you may use the Synaptic application, which is probably the best way for a new user. This will handle all dependencies for you.

What sorts of errors do you get when you try to install libdvdcss through Synaptic on Ubuntu?

    thanks for reply...

    hi
well the problem is that i am able to download libdvdcss2 but not w32codecs even i have install mplayer and vlc but when i ever try to run them either applcations closes it self or gives following error

" mplayer interrupted by signal 4 in module: unnown

Mplayer crashed by an 'illegal instruction'.it may be in our new runtime CPU-detection code..plz read Docs/html/en/bugreport.html

Mplayer carshed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM.recompile mplayer with --enable-debug-& make a 'gdb' backtrace and disassembly.

Mplayer crashed.this shouldnt happen.it can be a bug in mplayer code or in your drivers or in your gcc version. then it closes itself

and totem player shows " need libdvdcss2" or "sometime error in 4 module" then closes.

    i have libdvdcss2 installed

    hi sunnypiloo.

i use debian (not ubuntu). for debian, the some of the multimedia packages
are not in the standard repository, e.g. for w32codecs, dvd-support, and
realplayer i added the following line to /etc/apt/sources.list:

    Code:
    deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org etch main
once i added this line, i could install the package w32codecs for example
    by using

    Code:
    apt-get install w32codecs
ubuntu should be very similar, i did a quick search and stumbled across
this site which explains ubuntu repositories.

    hope this helps, kai

    Also check out this link:
    Welcome to EasyUbuntu

EasyUbuntu will help you install a number of non-standard packages, including CSS decryption and codecs.

Now, it says that EasyUbuntu only has w32codecs for x86. If this is the case, you can install them by hand from:
    MPlayer - The Movie Player
    (under "Binary Codec Packages")
