    Few ques!

I am new to linux and like many other I have many ques about this OS and about some career opportunities.
I am in India and working as a system admin for windows server for little over 2 years now. I have read many articles and attended few seminars about open source and got pretty influenced by those. I have tried installing linux (fedora and redhat) on my home PC and I managed to make them work. What all I know about linux is to install it, play songs and open few application in it.. that’s it!!!

Now, what I would like to know is, as per my understanding linux is manly for developers and not for System administrators. Is this correct? Do we have equal opportunities for a system admin for linux as compared to a developer? I am asking this because I am not good in development but can manage servers pretty well.

I would also like to know if compared windows servers with linux ones.. what do you prefer? I know this is a very controversial ques.. still I would like to know if compared on such a small bases and not OS as such, which is better.. what more I want to know is.. how do u all work with linux GUI or CLI? Which is better for what?

I know this is a lot to ask. I would really appreciate any help.. thanks in advance.

Absolutely. There are quite a few large companies that use Linux on their large servers or provide support for customers that do. IBM and Sun come to mind. I don't know how much server-side business they do in India, but I wouldn't put it past them.

This is a contraversial question because there is simply no single answer. Different OSes (and even different distributions within the same OS like Linux) have their strengths and weaknesses. Everyone's situation is unique. What works for one will not necessarily work for the other. In my opinion, there's simply no answer for this. It needs to be evaluated on a case by case basis. Anyone (from Microsoft or Redhat or anywhere else) that tries to sell you on The One Solution to Rule them All (tm) is just lying to you.

Again, this is more personal preference and individual case than anything else. For some projects and some people, it's simply impossible to work with a GUI (think for instance about a remote login server using a dumb terminal that has no graphics capabilities). For others, the GUI environment is simply more efficient (think large multi-source application development in Java).

    Welcome to the forums!

Linux is for anyone that wants to use it, be it developers, server admins, desktop users, etc.

Whether Windows or Linux is better for servers is a very subjective question and you'll only know which is best for you after you've tried them both. Otherwise, most of the folks here will likely say they prefer Linux servers.

I personally use command line and GUI, depending on what I want to do.

    Enjoy the Linux experience...
