Distro Types
I am looking for the various types I found a site a while ago that tells me what is Server/Media/desktop/business etc.
Of can any one suggest what woud be the best for all round desktop just general gaming, surfing etc. and I am looking for one for my office we run XP just now, but possibly cutting down on costs for this with a basic business class machine just for web browsing and transfering photos that about it apart from having to browse windows workgroups.
And finaly looking for a good server alternative , I am using a Sun Cobalt just now for the web server and FTP, any suggested on a distro for this?

Here's a comparison of some of the various Linux distros that might help you:

Thanks for that this helps alot.
For the business side I did try Xandros and it worked well, but the major gripe with this is why woudl I ever pay the money they are after when I can just buy Windows for the same price or less?
Is this not the reason for using Linux for the Cost?
Yes I knwo there are other factors but short of it all if I was given a choice for the business XP or Linux same price I knwo what the answer would be.

Most linux distributions are completely free to download, use and update. The most popular Desktop distribution is Ubuntu, because of its ease of use and most things seem to work out of the box. If you just want to connect up a lan network, browse the internet, and transfer photos then most distributions are suited to it. Try

to choose a distribution that would be good for you.

If you think XP is a better buy than Linux, go for it. Anyway I think you'll be using OpenOffice, otherwise you should add MS Office to the system cost for XP, and if you're going to use some other non-free programs, add those to the total cost too. And don't mind about the security and other common issues of XP, certainly the license cost must cover any incidents that may occur
