    Another windows to Linux Idiot.....

I feel like one of those annoying newbs for asking wherein I am sure this has been asked before but I couldn't find it:

I am currently a windows user and would love to cross over into Linux. After much consideration I have decided I want the control!...but.... I have a single laptop (sorta old in computer years) and no back up space other than maybe a butt load of blank cd's. All I need from Linux from day one are basic functions such as internet connectivity (wireless), browser and IM services. I know the distro I am looking at has Mozilla and Gaim out-of-the-box so to speak. which leaves me with the following two questions. #1 How can I back up my current information (MP3s, pictures, text files and various other things of the sort) without spending a bunch of cash? #2 Where can I get a straight forward answer if I can get my wireless working right away?

I am on a inspiron 9200 and looking to put the newest ubuntu on the system. If anyone can redirect me to my answers or give me a firm answer here please do. Thanks in advance.

    Use those CDs you've got?

Presumably you meant "can't". You'll have to ask questions and tell people if you don't understand their answers.

IMHO - Ubuntu is a good distro - and the only one I ever got my wireless to work on (took some work though) ---- your level of wireless pain is directly related to which wireless chipset you have
    Boot the liveCD
    open a terminal window
    enter command lspci -nn

    then post the response
