wish kind of command, in Slackware there is a lot of binaries placed in /sbin , so in order to access them you have to have the root permission , probably this might be your problem ,for example typing ifconfig as a normal user will gives you command not found .
Regards.Linux is not only an operating system, it's a philosophy.

Logging in as root is the worst habit a new Linux user can get themselves into.
Please consider always logging in as a regular user and using su or su - to get root permissions when needed for admin purposes.oz

A better approach would be to try and correct your fstab. If some element of your system is broken you should bear in mind there is a very strong possibility that this is as a direct result of you logging in as root.
On that note there is no need to write to anywhere outside of your home directory unless you are configuring something, with the possible exception of /tmp which everyone can write to anyway.
Slackware is a slightly more advanced distro. If you are having trouble there are many other distros which can provide a little more handholding until you are up and running.

What errors are you getting as regular user when you try to access root files after using su or su - to get root permissions?
