Need help picking distribution.
Hello everyone. I want to install Linux on my fathers PC because it's incredibly bad and is now running Windows XP. It runs so slow and if it was me using it, I would have already thrown it out the window. All he uses it for is pretty much internet browsing, e-mail, some basic office applications, AIM, etc.
I tried installing Ubuntu 6.06 on it before, but during the installation process from the CD, it froze. I think his CD drive is to slow to install from a CD, or at least this distribution of Linux it was. I had this same problem on one of my friends older computers as well.
Here is his specs, so maybe this will help you guys recommend one for him:
Gateway
Intel Pentium III Processor
497 MHZ
192 MB RAM
HDD : ST320410A
Video : RAGE 128 VR AGP
CD Drive : TOSHIBA CD-ROM XM-6602B
Standard Floppy Disk Drive
IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers:
- Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Bus Master IDE Controller
- Primary and Secondary IDE Channels
Network Card : 3Com 3C918 Integrated Fast Ethernet Controller (3C905B-TX Compatible)
Please if any of you could recommend a distribution and an install process it would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

Welcome to the forums!

Take a look at the link in my signature for lots of information on getting started with Linux, and picking that first distro.
Have fun with Linux!

coming from windows only, those with even half a clue have their minds blown when they see Damn Small Linux for the first time.
