    Making files available across platform

    Hi

I am playing with Linux at the moment - would love to have it full time on my machine, but 2 things stop me - playing Star Wars Galaxies and my wife's familiarity with windows.

Still - I have installed VMWARE and have a few flavors of linux to play with.

One thing I want to do is take php web pages (windows desktop - shared folder) and scp them to a linux web server (remote)

I set up Ubuntu through VMWARE and it works fine, but when I go to PLaces-> Networks and successfully find Windows Network, I am a little disapopinted to find the shared folder not there.

As my first step in this chain I wonder what I am doing wrong (or how many other ways there are) for getting the php files across from windowsxp shared folder to the VMWARED Ubuntu.

If anyone can help (er on any of the above really!!) I am very attentive.

    Many thanks,
    Bullytt

Wait... so you're trying to access a folder on your computer through a windows shared network folder? Umm... why may I ask? Are you just trying to test the share that you set up before you try to find it on another machine? I haven't done much with vmware, but I'm not sure it would be able to see a shared network folder coming from the same computer... it seems like there might be an ip address problem or something that would make it more difficult then it needs to be. It seems like there should be an easier way of transferring files between vmware and windows, but I don't have enough experience, and I'm not sure if mounting it normally would corrupt the partition (I know you never want to mount a linux drive from inside of a vmware'd linux). Give us a little more information on what exactly you want to do, and we might be able to suggest an easier method.

On a separate note, have you considered a dual-boot? That way your wife could keep her windows and you would still be able to play your games. It works for me, and I'm running off of a laptop with a 60gb hard drive with XP and Ubuntu Feisty.
