    PClinux0S Fatal error 104

    Hi,

Completely new to Linux so bear with me! No experience whatsoever. Linux will need to be easier to install before if it were ever to be mainstream.

I've installed pclinuxos on a usb pen by using the guide found here USB PCLinuxOS MiniMe install | Pen Drive Linux

However I think theres a problem with my graphics card which is a Intel GMA 950 on a Compaw nc6400 laptop.

When I log in using root and root and type startx the error is displayed (fatal IO error 104(connecting reset by peer) on X server "0.0"

Can anybody help? If I can't get this too work I'll have to buy a bigger USB pen so to install Windows on it but really want to see what all the Linux fuss is about!

    Thanks

    Dan

Before you do anything else, please read the link in my signature. After reading it, read the rest of my response...

You never log in to a Desktop Environment using root. The reason you are not able to do it is because your distro is protecting you from making this mistake. Did you set up a regular user account during the install and configuration? If you need to work from the command line, open a terminal as regular user and use "su." You do this by typing in:
    Code:
    su
and pressing enter. It will ask for your root password. Input that and press enter. You are now "Super User" and can do pretty much whatever you want without restraints, including nuking and paving your installation with a careless misplacement of a space or character... I'm just trying to let you know one of the reasons it is not a good idea to try and log into a DE as root.

    Hope this helps... Good luck.

Thanks for your help. I didn't do any setting up. Put it on a USB pen and expected it to run. Typed in "video" to change some options but wotever I try still results in the same error.

From reading loads of people have had this problem and it's usually something to do with the drivers for their video card and they input some commands to get the correct driver.

I've read the tlink Very interesting read.

Basically all I want is a small compact operating system on a usb pen so I can just browse the web.

    Thanks

    Dan

After the USB drive boots sign in as root as you already know how to do. Then type in:
    Code:
    kdm
and press enter. This is to bring up a type "sign in manager" where you sign in as regular user. I've never used PClinuxOS, but this is pretty standard on most distros with the KDE desktop environment. I would think it gave you the opportunity to create a regular user account during the installation process, but they may be doing something different I'm not aware of.

I typed in KDM and it nothing. There was no installation process as such. I downloaded the ISO and clicked on a bat file and it just went straight on the usb pen.

I put it in my machine choose to boot from usb hard drive, it loads up. I press enter at boot. Come up with PClinuxOS loading screen. Says booting system. Press esc for verbose mode. Then says "Trying to start graphical desktop. If for some reason this fails please log in here with name root password root, type video to set your video card and then type startx to get to the desktop. So I type in root and root then start x, whole lot of jargon comes up and I think an important bit of it is

"(WW) I810 No matching device section for instance (BusID PCI:0:2:1) found
(EE) No devices detected" Then a bit further down

"XIO: fatal IO error 104 (connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining"

Thanks again for your help. I'm sure we'll get it running soon. Probably something very simple I bet

I'll look at your post more closely later, but when you typed in kdm was it in all caps like what you did here? If so, it's all lower case... kdm.

I typed it in lowercase. Anybody have any suggestions how I would fix this? Or should I just try another version of Linux?

    Thanks
