HIya MS-hater,
No one can really recommend a Distro for you because choosing a Distro is a matter of personal preferences, either you like it or you don't, and only you would know whether or not you like it. I will suggest you try the "Easier" Distros first. Ubuntu, Mepis, OpenSUSE, Mandriva. You may find that you don't really like or want any of these so try them all!

MikeTbob is right, but I would suggest as a beginner to Linux you should try Ubuntu. Plus the Ubuntu forums are GREAT for helping you answer your questions (and so are the Linux forums!).

I personally think Ubuntu is the best Linux distro to date for computers with the necessary requirements.

First linux OS
Get Ubuntu 7.10 install it, take updates, go to Installation - Automatix Wiki
install it and go to "applications", "system tools" to find the program. Install everything offered.
One of the programs is wine. this will allow you to run some MS programs and games in ubuntu. go to: Wine HQ to see the list of supported apps.
sit back and enjoy.Alienware M17
Dual ATI 3870 512Mb ram each
intel 5300 wireless
Ubuntu 8.04

I would suggest you to try as many distros as you can and decide yourself. Check the link in my signature.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
