    What is faster Gentoo, Arch or Vector.

    Hi,

    I have an old laptop upon which i want to install linux, but im not sure whats the fastest ditribution, i know that Gentoo, Arch and Vector are all fast but which is the fastest. Here are my computer specs:

    Tecra 8100
    12gb hdd
    128mb ram
    Intel Pentium 3

    Add another 128mb ram and you wouldn't even care which one was faster.

    They all feel roughly the same to me. Of course, Arch is my default distro.

    Caveat: my comments on Gentoo/Arch/Vector are based on reading/research (not personal experience).

    In a sense, all three distros are minimalist and ideally suited for your needs. If you had the patience and time to kill, you might get a minor advantage using Gentoo (and optimizing the hell out of everything possible at compile time).

    But I'd strongly recommend going with Arch or Vector since they're primarily designed as package-based. This will provide a good balance of lightweight OS and quick software installation.

    Thanks im going to try gentoo first and if im not happy ill go to vector, arch has given me hell, couldn't even add a user!

    I used to run vector with 64mb ram. In my opinion installing vector is far easier than installing gentoo. Also keep in mind what anomie said about package management.
