Welcome to the forums!

You'd need to give more information before anyone can help.
What's the name of the Linux distribution that are you trying to install?
What have you done in an attempt to install it?
What error messages are you getting if any?
You create users and passwords during the installation on most distros, so I don't know why it would be asking for these yet.oz

There aren't any error messages, i've run the first cd ( there are 3) i got them with my computer as well as windows, but am fed up of windows so decided to swap over.
installation finished, rebooted and asked for login and password i do not know them. the front of the cd just say snapshot of ftp.suse.com etc.

I'm not sure what that might be, so in my opinion, you'd be best off to download the current distro of your choice and try installing again with that. OpenSUSE, Mandriva, PCLinuxOS, or Ubuntu would all probably be good choices for a new Linux user.
Take a look at the link in my signature for lots of good information on getting started with Linux.
Let us know how it goes.

I would suggest you get Ubuntu as it is the most (in my opinion) easy to get used to after many long years on the burning ship aka Microsoft.

If you didn't create a password when you did the installation,
try hitting the enter key, and see if it works.

You create the username and the password when you install linux. If you don't remember them, try installing linux again. If you have never used linux before, might I suggest you try SUSE or Mandriva? These are very user friendly distros that will be a much easier transition than many of the more "tech savvy" distributions.
